Who is AMA?    Amarillo ATCT is an  ATC-7 Combined Tower and Radar Approach Control Facility with a Class "C" Airspace.  Amarillo Approach handles traffic from the surface up to and including 17,000 feet.

Amarillo Approach airspace extends North to Borger, TX (BGD),  South to Hereford, TX (HRX), East of Groom, TX, and West to Vega/Oldham Co, TX (E52).  In addition to working all traffic in and out of Amarillo International, the Amarillo Approach Control works traffic in and out of: Borger (BGD), Amarillo/Buffalo (1E7), Herford (HRX), Panhandle (T47), Amarillo/Tradewind (TDW), and Vega/Oldham Co. (E52) as well as many smaller private airfields within our airspace.

Amarillo Approach airspace borders 2 Enroute Center Airspaces, Albuquerque and Fort Worth.  Our overlaying Center is Albuquerque.  

In order for an air traffic controller to certify as an FPL (full performance level controller) they must certify on all tower and radar positions within the facility. Normal time to certify is: for controllers with previous air traffic control experience approximately one to two years,  for someone without any air traffic control experience training can take two years or longer. Training consist of extensive classroom time, radar simulator, and on the job training provided by Certified Professional Controller (CPC) instructors.
